Rachelle L. Shaw, D.D.S., P.C.

First Visit

Did you know that the average three-year-old has two cavities? Dr. Shaw and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend children should visit her office around their first birthday and twice a year thereafter. At one year, this first visit can be pleasant, uneventful, and educational.

Parents are welcome in the operatory during the child’s first visit and all subsequent checkups.

Your child’s first visit to our office is as important to us as to you. The first visit includes a thorough examination, then a treatment plan is prepared. We use the technique known as “tell-show-and-do.” There is constant informative conversation to eliminate the silent periods that would allow the child to dwell on his or her fears. Our goal is to build a trusting relationship as we focus on your child.

Dr. Shaw will educate you and your child about the causes of tooth decay, the importance of fluoride treatments, and good dental hygiene to prevent decay and tooth loss. A major reason for tooth decay in children is sleeping with a bottle. Please keep in mind that a bottle should not be used as a pacifier. Bottles filled with milk or juice cause rapid and severe dental decay.

While creating an enjoyable, positive experience for you and your child, Dr. Shaw will examine your child’s teeth, jaws, tongue, and soft tissue. She will discuss cavities, treatment options, sippy cup use, thumb-sucking habits, bottle habits, etc. She will conclude with a comprehensive treatment plan.

Please bring the following to your child’s first visit:
1. Any current x-rays and records from the previous dentist.
2. Mailing address for your dental claims so we may file insurance for you.
3. The group number of your insurance policy.
4. The birth date and social security number of the insurance policy holder.

Dr. Shaw has your child’s smile in mind. She wants to set the stage for a lifetime of good dental habits. Every visit concludes with a visit to the toy box and our Tooth Fairy!
